The northwestern Coast of the Dominican Republic is pretty remote and very wild. Few surfers have ventured out past Puerto Plata towards the Haitian border. The main highway goes inland right after you leave the city, so the beach access is much more difficult. When we spoke to our friends at The Search DR, they recommended that we stay at the last hotel on the beach before the road goes inland. That hotel is the Senator Puerto Plata. It is a new all-inclusive resort that is situated on a gorgeous beach, and it is only a 10 minute drive to the famed teleférico and a 30 minute drive to the legendary 27 Charcos de Damajagua. It was a great place to make our base not only for common tourist attractions, but also for scoring uncrowded surf.
It is a great place to stay for anyone looking for a relaxing beach atmosphere. They provided a crib for our baby, and the all-inclusive aspect made things very smooth and it was easy getting all the kids fed with food they loved and all the kids ready to go out exploring with us. The resort was kid friendly as well and the staff was very helpful. They helped us find a babysitter and they have a kids club for ages 4+. The 3 pools were another highlight, especially the pool side piña coladas! There were ice cream chops, and good desserts around the premises. We spent most of our time adventuring around town, but also had a day or two of downtime, where we were able to relax at the beach and pool of the hotel. It was very convenient and relaxing.
The combination of beautiful location, convenience and amenities makes this resort a great and recommended place to stay if you are spending a lot of time northwest of Puerto Plata!
